Why do we see water ponds on roads in the summertime?

It is a kind of optical illusion that commonly occurs on hot
days. When the air directly above the asphalt road is
heated in such a way there become two mediums hot air
and cold air that is denser. Therefore, cold air has
a greater refractive index allowing light to refract(bend)
upon passing from cold to hot. The result is an image of
the sky above appears on the ground. To our eyes, the
distorted rays look like they are coming from the
ground. Thus, the brain interprets it as there is water
responsible for the reflection, which seems more
reasonable to the viewer.
